Jan Hicks - Biography
Jan Hicks has always had a love of knitting yarns and fabrics, and uses a wide variety of materials and techniques to interpret her surroundings. She draws inspiration from her surroundings, wherever she may be, although her subject matter is usually rural. She has a small farm and often uses fleece from her sheep and angora goats within her embroidery and felt. The history of the land and the influence of people who have been there before are important in her life.
Jan completed her City and Guilds in Creative Embroidery in 2001, since when she has had work accepted for several exhibitions in Cumbria and Lancashire. Her work is also in several local galleries. She is part of the Woolclip cooperative, and as a member of Eden Artisans has studio space at Farfield Mill, Sedbergh. She is currently studying for a degree in Creative Applied Arts at Cumbria Institute of the Arts.
